Where can I get a tomato tree, how big do they get, how long until they ripen, and how's the taste? |
If you're referring to the tomato tree plant that's advertised in some magazines as producing up to 60 pounds of tomatoes each year, it's a plant called Cyphomandra, and it really isn't a tomato at all. It's a tree-like shrub that comes from Peru and grows 2-inch long red fruits. The fruits are edible, but not many people enjoy eating them fresh. Mostly the fruits are stewed or made into jelly. You can purchase them by mail order at the following address: MBT Nursery Sales, Dept. TT-9504 1401 Lakeland Ave. Bohemia, NY 11716 Before you invest your time and money, though, you might think about going the more traditional route to great tasting tomatoes - growing your own from seed. Stick with tried and true named varieties like Big Boy, Better Boy, or Burpee's Supersteak Hybrid. |
