| What would be the best heucheras for my Zone 9 garden near New Orleans, and could you tell me if they self-sow? Are they suseptible to slug damage? I love purple, and I use contrasting colors (shades, hues and tints of yellows and oranges) because of our brick that is a rusty reddish color. I especially like salmons, apricots, rusty and peachy colors; and, I am certainly not averse to different shades of green. The shrubs in my front bed include (from left to right) are: a large lantana under my pretty bathroom window, a newly purchased solid green pittisporum in a corner between the bath and bedroom; a large stand of bird-of-paradise in the middle of our large bedroom window; and a double purple (white inner petals) datura that will go at the far right of the bed this fall that will be underplanted with ixora. Would you be able to suggest some tall annuals &/or perennials for the back of my bed that would blend well. My tithonia seeds didn't germinate well. Is it too late to but more seed, since they bloom for such a large period of time? Thank you so much for your time. I watch the show every Saturday afternoon on Channel 32/ WLAE from New Orleans. | Dianne, Sounds like you have a beautiful landscape going there! Heuchera's can't take the southern summers in your region and thus are not recommended for your zone. Tithonia is not normally difficult to germinate. Moist soil (don't let it dry out our stay soggy), sunlight and warm conditions are what is needed. Your seeds may not have been good. Try some more in small containers in a bright shady spot. When they germinate move to a morning sun location and then after another week or so plant them out into the garden. You sound like a gardener who can't wait to get started! But please, one question at a time. We are building our database of answers for other gardeners and can only use single questions.
