| I am researching ways to control earwigs in my garden. I have already read through your Q&A section and will try your suggestion of using diatomaceous earth. I have already tilled organic material into my garden this fall, and am interested in introducing beneficial insects such as green lacewings, praying mantises, and ladybugs. How will the diatomaceous earth affect them and are there other organic controls I could or should be using? |
| Diatomaceous earth consists of the fossilized remains of tiny sea creatures called diatoms. These creatures injure the soft bellies of crawling pests such as slugs and cabbage worms (but, diatomaceous earth is non-selective and can also wipe out harmless caterpillars as well). Diatomaceous earth also works by affecting the respiratory systems of some pests (it can also hurt you if inhaled so use caution). Soap sprays/insecticidal soaps are an effective organic control of earwigs. Remember earwigs aremost active at night so apply whatever treatment you choose in the late afternoon/evening. |
