Sorry about your plant, but glad the roofers will replace it. There are two plants commonly called Bird's Nest:

Bird's Nest Spruce (Picea abies 'Nidiformis') is a small to medium-sized shrub with a broad rounded and flat-topped habit. A slight depression in the center along with the symmetrical shape gives rise to the cultivar name. Size: 3-6' high x twice as wide, with a very slow growth rate.

Tsuga canadensis 'Jeddeloh' - a dwarf shrub form to 3' tall by 5' wide, with a subtle depression in the center, and an alternative to Picea abies 'Nidiformis'.

Best wishes with your new plant!
