The Q&A Archives: barcelona purple (lavender)

Question: hi, i am zone 6b and my local home depot was sellign barcelona purple lavender, which i bought. will it survive winter in my region or shall i dig it up and bring indors over winter. i also put some in a pot. what sort of care will it need in the pot and should i leave it in the pot over winter or plan on the ground or bring indoors. thank you

Answer: This is a cultivar of So-called Spanish lavender or Lavandula stoechas and is only hardy to zone 7 so it will not overwinter for you outdoors. (It might if you have a very sheltered microclimate with soil that is perfectly drained, such as sandy or gritty soil on a slight slope.) Since it does not transplant at all well you may want to simply grow it as an annual and replant each year. If you want to try to overwinter it in a container you would need to use a fast draining soil mix and a terra cotta pot to allow for perfect drainage, and keep it in a cool but bright location with good air circulation. Good luck with your project.
