Most of my purchases are Monrovias. This year my favorite is the Bougainvillea. Will bring it inside for the winter, but how do I prvent aphids? How much light does it need over the winter? It is on a trellis now, about 5' tall in a big urn. Should I cut it down for the winter? |
Glad you like Monrovia plants! Your bougainvillea will bloom on a 4 week cycle. It blooms on new wood. The best method of caring for your plant is to allow it to flower, then immediately prune it back so it will produce new flowering shoots. If you provide 4 hours of sunshine a day indoors, it should bloom off and on all year for you. Cut it down after each bloom cycle and it should remain a manageable size for moving indoors and out. Aphids can be controlled with applications of Insecticidal Soap. Apply as often as recommended on the label. Best wishes with your new bougainvillea! |
