We are having landscaping installed on a new construction home and we would like to include an ornamental tree in the front landscaping bed on the corner of the house. Since it will be close to the house, it probably can't be very big. We would prefer something that is not

Ornamental pear is really a good tree for the size of the site and will provide 3-season interest. Or, you might consider Cornus kousa (dogwood). These small trees provide spring flowers in white or pink, and most develop beautiful fall colors. Either selection can be maintained by annual pruning (after flowering has finished). Best wishes with your new landscape!
