| I planted photinias 1 year ago. They show very little growth, if any. What could be the problem? Planted too deep? Need fertilizer? Need extra water? Should I pull up and replant if planted too deeply? |
| It can take newly planted shrubs a few months to establish their root systems before they begin to show new growth, but if you planted yours last year and they are not yet growing, there's a problem! Usually it boils down to not enough sunshine, not enough water, or poorly draining soils. Make sure your photinias are getting full sun to at least half-day sun; water deeply once or twice a week, depending upon weather. Plants should be planted at the same soil depth as they were growing in the nursery pot. If you plant them too deeply, the main stems can rot due to excess moisture. If you think they're planted too deeply, wait until the weather cools this fall and dig and replant them. If you think they're planted at the right depth, don't move them but do prune them back a little. Sometimes pruning will force the plant into waking up and putting out new growth.
