The Q&A Archives: Pieris Forest Flame

Question: My plant is approx 1.5 metres tall X 1 metre wide & in a pot approx .75 metres wide. It is now getting leggy. Am I correct in thinking its growth is now being restricted & will it be okay to now place it in open ground?

Answer: You'd be doing your pieris a favor by planting it in the ground. It will eventually outgrow the container, and restricting the roots will stunt the plant's growth. Wait until early fall to plant it in your garden; next spring, when new growth begins, prune your shrub back by one-third. The new growth should emerge from the tips of the stems and from lower down on the main stems. This will help renew your pieris and make it compact and bushy. Enjoy!
