Michael,

That is indeed not a good sign. It indicates something wrong in the roots. Some possible causes include burn from a fertilizer application, droughty conditions, and poor drainage in the planting hole (roots stay soggy wet too long). If you can determine which is the cause and remedy it the plant may recover. The solution to an excessive fertilizer application is to drench the soil thoroughly several times to wash away excessive salts.
