I just moved into this house and we are starting to work on the backyard. I was out there the other day and noticed something that I've never seen before and am worried about it being harmful to my dog. They are all round in shape and at first look like the top of a mushroom. I used a little rake to try and get it and when I rant the rake through it, it just fell apart like a fuzzy ball and they were deep in the ground for something that small. The whole thing fell apart as I raked it up and I noticed that they are all over the yard. Although, they are in the part of the backyard that is mostly dirt and barely any grass. Do you have any idea of what this could be?

If it disappeared when you touched it, I'll bet it is a fungi of some sort. There are many, many types and I suspect that it is living off of some buried wood of some sort - either old tree roots or rotting lumber. To keep the fungi from growing, you'll need to dig up the buried treasure. Otherwise, just expect these things to appear on occasion. They shouldn't be attractive to your dogs so I don't think there's any danger in having them in your yard.
