The Q&A Archives: Coleus pests

Question: What can I use to kill whatever is eating my coleus?

Answer: There really isn't anything you can apply to kill a pest you can't identify - not all insecticides are effective against all pests. A better approach would be to determine exactly what is causing the problem - snails, slugs, caterpillars, etc. and then work to defeat them. Snails and slugs can be handpicked or trapped; caterpillars can be eliminated with Bt; aphids can be controlled with Insecticidal Soap. Inspect your plants carefully to find the responsible critters. They may be night-feeding pests so go out after dark with a flashlight to see if you can catch them in the act. Once you've identified the culprit you can use the appropriate control measure. Best wishes with your coleus!
