You will need to keep the soil moist below the roots so that they can grow down into it. The roots will not grow into dry soil. How long and how often will depend on the weather and the type of soil you have, and on how well you prepared the soil. To know if you need to water, dig into the soil with your finger. If it is still damp you do not need to water yet. After watering, wait a few hours and then dig down and see if the water soaked in far enough. There is no set schedule for watering so you will have to check it and see, eventually you will develop a sense of how much watering you need to do.
