Squash plants produce both male and female flowers. It is normal for the petals to wither away after one day. Male flowers will simply drop off but female flowers, if they have been pollinated, will produce fruit. You can tell the difference between male and female flowers (and the possiblity of having squash) by looking at how the flowers are attached to the stem. Male flowers will have a straight stem; female flowers will have a slight swelling just beneath the flower petals. Hope this answers your question!
