The Q&A Archives: apple trees

Question: i have a tree in my back yard that is an apple tree but i would like to know what kind of apple. The apples are a little bigger then golf balls and when they are on the tree they are the color of granny apples

Answer: There are many different varieties of apple, hundreds if not thousands including many heirlooms. To begin to identify it you would have to know the diameter and the color and the relative ripening time of the apple. Another clue can be knowing when the tree was planted, as certain varieties have come in and gone out of favor over the years or were widely planted in certain areas. Your local county extension may be able to help you identify it, or you might find a photo among the links listed at the following page. Best of luck with your quest!
