The Q&A Archives: mexican fan palms

Question: How can you tell the gender of the mexican fan palms? I understand that the female trees flower with all the petals & seeds.

Answer: As a matter of fact, Washingtonia robusta produces bisexual flowers so you need only one plant to produce seeds. But, just to set the record straight, if there were separate male and female Mexican fan palms, both would produce flowers; only the female would produce seeds (just like with hollies).
