Two falls ago I purchased four burning bushes that were in 5 gallon containers and were brilliantly red. Last fall they only turned a dull burgandy and lost their leaves. What can I do to ensure that their brilliant red returns???

Euonymous alatus (burning bush) is relatively adaptable to most soils but they seem to color up better in acidic soils. Try feeding with an acidified food (such as for rhododendrons and azaleas) and mulch over the top of the soil with pine needles or peat moss to help acidify the soil. Best wishes with your shrubs!
