Perhaps unwisely, I bought Niobe clematis root recently and am wondering what special precautions I can and need to take to plant it in a sunny location. I intend to use it as a ground cover. Should I wait until September when the weather is cooler? If so, what is the best way to store it? Would a refrigerator be too cold? Would a basement tile floor be a good place for storage? Thank you for your help. |
Although the air temperature seems high in mid-summer, the soil temperature will be quite nice for your clematis root. Dig a hole 18" deep and wide in which to plant roots. After they've been planted, water the area well to settle the soil. Clematis likes the tops in the sun and the roots in the shade, so plant a small shrub in front of your clematis, or place a large stone just in front of it to help keep the roots cool. Best wishes with your clematis! |
