We have planted mimosa trees at our lake house. The property has a septic tank with lateral lines. Do these trees grow toward lateral lines? We have been told by friends that we will be sorry for planting the trees there. Can you help me in this matter?

Trees send out roots beyond their branch spread in the search for moisture; a spread of about twice their width is not at all uncommon and some trees such as willows are notorious for sending their roots well beyond that. Usually the suggestion is not to plant large trees within about thirty to fifty feet of the drain field.
