The amount depends on your soil type - but here's the breakdown:
3.5 pounds for very sandy soils
5 pounds for sandy soils
7 pounds for loam-type soils
8 pounds for clay-type soils

It takes a while for the lime to mellow the soil, so apply in the fall and let the winter rains wash it down into the soil. Lime should be applied every 3 or 4 years.

If you're growing vegetables, your ultimate goal is a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

Because soil pH is so important to nutrient availability, and can even affect soil structure in some cases, you should have your soil tested before adding lots of lime. Your county agricultural extension office can help you with soil testing information, and may be able to perform the test for you.
