The Q&A Archives: How do I trim Cedar trees?

Question: What is the best and proper ways to trim cedar tree branches? We have branches overhanging our gutters?

Answer: You want to prune back to the next larger branch, or back to the trunk if the branch is attached there. You don't want to leave stubs, or shear. I recommend you go to your County Cooperative Extension office. They have Master Gardeners and will have publications that will show you how to make an appropriate pruning cut and how to prune. It's better to see illustrations or see it done than try to explain it! They are in Prescott, 445-6590.
