Hi, We have a Japanese Maple tree and we are trying to determine the type. It has a red trunk and the current leaves sprout green with a red border and then eventually turn red. Leaves have an average of five lobes. I think it is about a year old (it is about 3 feet tall and trunk is no wider than pinkie finger). Can you please help us with type so we know how to properly care for the tree. Thank you. Kristine |
You may very well have a Coral Bark Maple (Acer palmatum Sango Kaku. This is a vigorous, upright tree-like shrub. The twigs and branches are a striking coral red. If this is your tree, you'll want to provide afternoon shade and protection from winds to keep the foliage looking its best. Maples like rich, well draining soils and ample moisture in summer. Enjoy your tree! |
