Anything that likes sun should grow there. You might consider the following:
Use a quality potting mix for good drainage and water holding ability.
Select containers of adequate size such as 2 gallons or more for herbs and 5 gallons or more for tomatoes. Containers must have drainage holes.
Water enough to keep the soil evenly moist, which may mean twice daily in summer.
Fertilize with a soluble product following label instructions.
Then choose the plants you want to grow and go for it!
