would it harm to trim the leaves in early September? I know this is preferably in the spring... but, I need to do some maintenance around them the first week of September so I need to trim the leaves.

It won't hurt your Liriope to cut it back now, but the leaves will have jagged edges for the rest of the season. You can even things up early next spring and when new growth appears, it will renew your plant.
