| I have a White Sails which I got as a cutting from a healthy houseplant. I have it in shade, moderate humidity and keep it moderately watered, but it's not thriving. There have been very few new leaves and no blooms. There are only the two original stalks and I'm wondering how to encourage it to send up new stalks, new leaves and eventually, blooms. Suggestions? |
| Are you referring to a peace lily, or spathiphyllum? From your description, and the mention that you have it in the shade, that's what I'm guessing. You might just need to be patient. The plant may be directing all its energy into root growth right now. If the two leaves you have look healthy, then keep doing what you're doing. If the plant is growing in a very light or soilless potting soil, you might fertilize it just once, with a dilute houseplant fertilizer. Don't fertilize more than that, however. You generally want to fertilize plants when they are actively growing. Many houseplants are quite slow-growing, especially this time of year, so it may be quite some time before your plant becomes lush and fills its pot, and even longer before it blooms. |
