I think i am in a zone 7 is that correct? I have purchased a musa acuminata zebrina and I am getting conflicting info on the winter care. I was hoping I could plant in the ground and cover with burlap during cold time (10C to -6C)cold time is usally dec to feb with the usuall temp around 5C to 10C with a couple cold streaks as per above temps. If I would be better using a pot and bringing in what size of pot should I use. As you can see I am a rookie and I love tropicals and want more. Is there a list of tropicals that will thrive here, i like different things and I would like to start getting some really n ice and different evergreens as want to make atleast 4 outdoor rooms. Thank you for your assistance

Blood Banana is rated hardy only to zone 10 and will suffer some leaf damage at temperatures of 30F or below. However, the roots are hardy and, if covered with a protective mulch, will live over in your gardening zone. Musa is a fast growing plant and even if the tops are killed by winter weather, new foliage will appear in the spring. It doesn't make a suitable houseplant so taking it inside isn't an option in this case.

However, there are many tropical looking plants that will winter over indoors and summer happily outdoors in your region. Rather than list them all, here's a reference you'll find to be wonderfully helpful in planning your landscape: Sunset Western Garden Book (available in garden centers and most libraries). It's packed full of suggestions for all types of garden themes, as well as listing hundreds of plants along with their cultural requirements. It's quite inspiring! Enjoy!
