| Chamaecyparis pisifera (Boulevard cypress) is a hardy little tree -- soft-looking but rugged -- can take winters of 30 below as well as summer heat just short of the subtropical. Like most Chamaecyparis, Boulevard stays fairly short, usually less than 10 feet at maturity. Its pyramidal shape takes formal shearing handily, and you might do well to use this tiny tree, instead of a clipped yew, in foundation plantings. Or, let it grow casually, and use as a specimen or in a mixed-shrub border. It is considered a slow-grower, typically putting on 4-6 inches of growth each year. |
