Can the porcupine grass be kept in a pot outdoors? Does it have to be planted in the ground? Please advise. Thank you. |
Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' (Porcupine Grass) is hardy to USDA zone 5 (you're in zone 6). It will survive your winter weather if left in the ground, but won't if left in a pot. To keep it in a pot and keep it safe over the winter months, you'll need to provide some insulation. The easiest way to do this is simply to sink the pot in the ground for the winter months. This is a deciduous grass so the top will die down at the end of the growing season. When that happens, trim away the dead foliage and mulch over the entire pot plus the adjacent ground with several inches of compost, shredded leaves, or other organic material. In the spring, unearth the pot and it should produce new foliage. Enjoy! |
