The Q&A Archives: Vines for northern exposure 8 ft high wood fence?

Question: I have been thinking of planting potato vine on this high 30 fence. I am told it blooms most of the year is condusive to the climatic conditions and is not too heavy for the fence. I was also told that it is an encroaching plant that may pop up where it is not planted.
The bedding area in front of the fence is approx. 30

Answer: Air potato (Dioscorea bulbifera) is an invasive vine and I would avoid planting it; Solanum jasminoides, the potato vine that is commonly grown to cover terraces and fences is a vigorous grower, but can be controlled if cut back severely each spring. You can also pull up any runners that appear in your flower bed. Hope this answers all your questions!
