I would like to plant some sort of tree/shurb or flowering bush to screen out the houses behind mine. I would like a fast growing tree aboout 8-10 ft tall and not require a lot of prunning. I thought of maybe ficus but heard that the root system can cause problems to foundations and fences. Any ideas?

Melody,

Ficus is an option but your zone may provide an occasional winter where temps drop too low. You would need to prune it to keep it at that height.

Another option would be Bright N Tight Carolina Cherry Laurel. With some pruning it will also stay in that height and make a very nice, dense shrub.
