I just planted a 6'tree, gets almost full sun. We hit some very large boulders and could not plant as deep as usual. The hole is ~ 7' in diameter. How often should it be watered? Thanks! |
There is no set rule to give you for frequency. You will need to dig into the soil with your finger and feel it. If it is still damp do not water yet. When you do water, water slowly and thoroughly so it soaks down into the soil. After watering, wait a few hours and then dig down and see how far it went -- sometimes this is surprising. This tree requires an evenly moist yet well drained soil, meanikng damp like a wrung out sponge and never saturated/sopping wet and never dry, either. Usually an acidic humusy soil is recommended. Using a layer of organic mulch several inches deep over the root zone should also help keep it more evenly moist and also help feed the soil slowly over time as it breaks down. Depending on how the rock is configured, in my experience your spot may dry out far too quickly for this tree to be healthy in the long term, although you may be able to counter this with extremely careful watering. I hope it works out for you. |
