I recently bought a Monrovia Oakleaf Hydrangea, but it does say what species it is. Here are two numbers I found on the tag--042092 & 2698SH. Or how do I know what species it is??

Oakleaf hydrangea is Hydrangea paniculata. Monrovia lists half a dozen or more named varieties of H. paniculata in the online plant descriptions so I can't tell you which cultivar you have. Perhaps your retailer can decypher those numbers for you, they did not bring up a result in the catalog search. I hope this helps.
