The Q&A Archives: Planting Beneath a Bur Oak tree

Question: I'm looking for an evergreen shrub or groundcover that I can plant under a Bur Oak tree.

Answer: Oak trees cast a lot of shade and have shallow roots which will compete with other plants for nutrients and moisture so there are not too many plants for you to choose from. I have had good success with vinca minor; it is evergreen, flowers sporadically throughout the growing season, and doesn't seem to mind the litter from the trees. It may work well for you, too. You might also consider Pachysandra, Hypericum, Sarcococca, or Creeping Mahonia. Enjoy your garden!
