We have three 21 year old liquid amber trees whose roots are causing a lot of damage. They have southern exposure in full sun. They receive water 3 days per week for 15 minutes.

Is the Japanese maple a suitable substitute as an ornamental shade tree?

What else would you suggest? NO aggressive roots, please!

Japanese maples won't be happy in full afternoon sunshine, so I wouldn't recommend planting them as replacements for your Liquidamber trees. Some well behaved, deep rooted trees include Basswood, the little leaf linden; Cercis canadenisis (Eastern Redbud); Fraxinus americana 'Autumn Purple' (Autumn Purple Ash); Lagerstroemia indica (Crape Myrtle), or Pyrus kawakamii (Evergreen Pear).

Hope one of these suggestions is perfect for your landscape!
