The Q&A Archives: Gardenia "First Love" vs. "August Beauty"

Question: I purchased an "August Beauty" from a local nursery in San Antonio,Texas (Milbergers); they told me it will grow 6'-8' tall. I need two gardenias for an east facing wall under two windows, so the plants need to top out at around 4', maximum 5'. The nursery salesperson told me I needed to wait for "First Love" gardenias. However, on your website, the "First Love" can get to 6'-8', while it is the August Beauty" is described as "a moderate grower that can get to 5'." Granted, this is a tough climate, so perhaps the plants don't get as tall as they might in, say, San Francisco. However, what would you advise?? Also, is it true gardenias only flower when day temp. don't go above 72 degrees, while nights are around 60-62 degrees?

Thank you for your response-
