| I am just getting into gardening. I bought 2 Mandevilla (tag says excellent for patio containers). I was wanting a vine to plant by a kids tall wooden playhouse. Do I keep these in planters and attach trellise to playhouse. Do I need to cut it down in winter? Will it grow back in the spring? Thanks so much for your help, I don't know much about plants! Dana |
| Mandevilla is a frost-tender plant and yours will not live over the winter season if you leave them outdoors. You didn't say whether or not you've planted your Mandevillas in the ground. If so, you'll want to dig them up and plant them in containers so you can take them indoors for the winter months. Wait until nighttime temperatures hover around 50F, dig the plants, prune them back to a manageable size, and take them indoors. They'll need bright light and water often enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy wet. In the spring when the weather warms, you can take the plants back outdoors. I'd leave them in the containers and simply sink the containers into the ground. These are fast growing plants and even though you cut them down each year, they should grow up a trellis to provide a tropical look in your landscape. Best wishes with your garden! |
