| Congratulations on your new home! With lawns, the most important things you can do are mow correctly and fertilize correctly to encourage the lawn grass to grow healthy and outcompete weeds. Your county extension should have additional information about lawn care in your area and should be able to help you develop a maintenance and improvement plan for it, as well as running the initial soil tests you'll need to determine how much/how little to fertilize. In the meantime you may want to look at a book or two about gardening and lawn care; the Dummies series includes a number of gardening topics including Gardening for Dummies, Lawncare for Dummies, and Landscaping for Dummies.
