The Q&A Archives: Lawn & Garden 101

Question: I am a new homeowner and I know nothing about lawn & garden. My lawn is brown and green in different areas. What infomation can you provide me with? I need Lawn & Garden 101.

Answer: Congratulations on your new home! With lawns, the most important things you can do are mow correctly and fertilize correctly to encourage the lawn grass to grow healthy and outcompete weeds. Here is a fact sheet to help you get started.

Your county extension should have additional information about lawn care in your area and should be able to help you develop a maintenance and improvement plan for it, as well as running the initial soil tests you'll need to determine how much/how little to fertilize.

The OSU Extension also provides many more helpful lawn and garden factsheets on-line at

In the meantime you may want to look at a book or two about gardening and lawn care; the Dummies series includes a number of gardening topics including Gardening for Dummies, Lawncare for Dummies, and Landscaping for Dummies. I particularly like this series because it assumes no prior knowledge and gives very straightforward, practical, useful information.

Enjoy your new home!
