Question: Our St. Augustine lawn, despite regular watering, has developed brown patches and has even completely died in places. As it is September in Houston, what should we do?

I can't guess at which insect or disease did this without seeing a sample. However, I suspect it is either Take All Patch or chinch bugs. I suggest that you take a sample from the turf (cut a 4X4 inch plug with some roots and place it in a zip type bag) along with a photo of the plant in its growing location (if possible) to your County Extension Office to see if they can help diagnose the problem and recommend an appropriate course of action.
