The Q&A Archives: Scales

Question: Hello from FL! I have a question about SCALES that are on the small branches of my shrubs. The shrubs or hedge is along the front part of the house. This area gets about 100% sun light a day. How do I get rid of the SCALES. And can I get these items at HOME DEPOT. The hedges are turning a little brown and getting dried-out I think these SCALES are sucking out the vitals from these shurbs. Your answer would be greatly appriciated as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and effort.

Answer: Mark,

Scale can be controlled with various products, but results can vary depending on the plant and species of scale. Horticultural or summer oil (not dormant oil) is effective if you can get thorough coverage with the spray. Oil kills by smothering the scale insects so it only kills where the spray covers the plant.

There are also some systemic insecticides that can be effective against certain scales. Speak to someone at your local Home Depot garden center about what product they sell that are labeled for scale control on ornamental plants. Some examples include products with ingredients such as imidocloprid, acephate, and disulfoton.
