| The reflective sunlight refers to sunny winter days when the sun's rays bounce off of the snow--sort of the same as getting a so-called ski tan and why skiers need sun glasses. The heat from the sun's rays can also bounce or reflect off of adjacent buildings and paved areas. This can cause the plant to try to grow in midwinter or cause the plant to dry out. Ideally you would plant a spruce in a grassy area or wide planting bed rather than next to a building. Newly planted trees may appreciate a burlap barrier on the sunnier and windier sides as well.
