I don't know if the plant I bought last spring is a climbing hydrangea or another form of hydrangea? How do I tell?

Climbing hydrangea (H. petiolaris) is a slow growing vine with thick, eventually woody, stems. It takes several years for it to take hold and begin to grow much at all. The growth is more or less horizontal until it reaches something it can lean up against, eventually it can reach a huge size of maybe 40 feet. Other types of hydrangeas are clearly shrubby with upright growth and multiple stems or branches coming up from the ground. They tend to grow relatively quickly, too. I hope this helps.
