Question: I purchased a Monrovia Fat Albert Spruce from Gale's Garden Center in Willoughby Ohio. The leader and other branches have been pruned. I am concerned that this will impact the growth of the tree. I have also heard that some nurseries top the Colorado Blue Spruce to "create" a Fat Albert. In looking more closely at the tree, it does not appear to be a Fat Albert, for which I paid a premium price. The needles are longer and less dense than other specimens I have seen since purchasing the tree. Is there any possibility that this specimen is, in fact, a Colorado Blue Spruce and not a Fat Albert hybrid?
