i am new to gardening!! what is a/or to groundcover?

Abraham,

A groundcover is a plant grown to form a low carpet over the ground. Groundcovers are alternatives to lawns, and may be many low growing plants set close together (such as liriope or mondo) or vining plants (such as Asian jasmine or English ivy).
