The Q&A Archives: how do you propagate new plants from my red banana?

Question: My other banana plants put out lots of baby bananas as suckers, my red banana is huge over 15 ft but no shoots of new plants, how do I get more plants?

Answer: Linda,

Red Banana (Ensete ventricosum) does not usually produce side shoots or "pups" like other bananas tend to do. If the main shoot flowers and dies pups will then form. Commercially it is either grown from seed or propagated by digging it up and cutting through the base or corm to form two or more plants.
