Ornamental cabbage or kale is a cool-season annual plant. It will grow in full sun to part shade, in well draining soil. As long as the temperatures remain above freezing, ornamental cabbage or kale will continue to develop colorful new leaves. Once a heavy freeze sets in, it will die. Plant just as you would other cool season annuals such as pansies and snapdragons. Enjoy while you can, but expect them to die when the ground freezes.
