I planted a english Ivy this spring on the west side and now we have added an awning and it is covered. Can I dig it up and move it without killing it? How deep are the roots?

Since they've only been in the ground a few months, the roots of your ivy have probably not grown more than an inch or two out from where they were originally planted. Fall is an excellent time to dig and transplant. Ivy is such a vigorous grower that transplanting it now should not cause any harm. Best wishes with your garden!
