In my experience these hydrangeas do better if planted in the spring. This allows them an entire season to become rooted and established prior to their first winter. If you have already purchased one you should plant it right away in a location that is sheltered and protected from winter winds (and mulch deeply in late fall) or else plan on overwintering it in a protected location such as an unheated garage. I hope this helps.
