| We recently removed a monterey pine from our backyard. Under that pine is a Blue Cedar. The question is how to care for the tree now that the pine is gone. Feeding, root care, watering, pruning and additional sun are all questions we have. THank you |
| Probably the biggest adjustment your cedar will need to make is with the additional sunlight it will be receiving now that your pine tree is gone. You may see some sun scorch on the needles. There's not much you can do to prevent this, but the tree should adjust over time and the new foliage it develops should be able to withstand full sunshine. I'm sure the roots were competing with the pine tree roots for moisture and nutrients. Now that there is no more competition, you may need to make adjustments. If you regularly fertilized and watered both your trees, continue to do so on the same schedule, but check the soil moisture content by watering as usual, then waiting 3-4 days and digging a hole near the roots of your cedar. If the soil 3-4 inches below the surface is still moist, you won't need to water for a few more days. If the soil is soggy wet, water less frequently; if the soil is dry, it's time to water. After a while you'll get a feel for just how often your tree needs to be watered. As for feeding, spring is best. Apply in amounts as recommended on the fertilizer package.
