The Q&A Archives: Cutting back and caring for Pennisetum setaceum

Question: We have two Pennisetum setaceum in our front flower bed. We live in Ohio, where winter can get bitterly cold. Will these die in the below freezing temperatures? When and how much do we need to cut them back?

Answer: Unfortunately this particular ornamental grass is only hardy to zone 8 (think Florida) so it will not survive your winter weather. Sadly there is no way to protect it so it will survive. You can rip it out after frost or leave it until spring and then remove it if you like the look of the grasses in the winter time. I'm sorry.
