Can the compact shiny xylosma be used as a small stand alone tree?

Will the trunk get strong enough to support the plant without a supporting wood stake?

Thank You

Compact shiny xylosma has a compact, upright growing habit and is often espaliered or used as a topiary or bonsai specimen. After initial training (staking, pruning), the main stem will be strong enough to support the plant without staking.
